About Me

I’m a psychologist, professor, clinical supervisor, speaker/workshop leader, consultant, and author, living and working in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I have a master’s degree in counselling psychology from Simon Fraser University (1985) and a PhD in counselling psychology from the University of Calgary (2008). I am a Registered Psychologist in the provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, a Clinical Fellow and Approved Supervisor in the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT), and a Registered Marriage and Family Therapist Supervisor Mentor with the Canadian Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (CAMFT).
As a Registered Psychologist for over thirty-five years, I’ve worked in child and adolescent mental health programs as a front line therapist, clinical supervisor, and program director; employee assistance programs; private practice; and instructor or professor in eight post-secondary institutions. This breadth of experience in practice and teaching has prepared me for my current role as a professor in the Master of Counselling Program at Athabasca University.
- As a professor, I contribute to the training of the next generation of psychologists and counsellors by teaching, writing courses, and conducting and supervising research.
- At Calgary Family Therapy Centre, an international training and research centre, I consult and teach.
- In my private practice, I work with families experiencing high conflict divorce and disputes over parenting. I conduct assessments and consult to lawyers about the value of expert psychological evidence.
- I am passionate about my role as a clinical supervisor. I have supported over forty Provisional Registered Psychologists to successfully complete their licensing requirements. I also supervise members to become Clinical Fellows of AAMFT or Registered Marriage and Family Therapists with CAMFT. From 2016 to 2020, I taught the Advanced Clinical Supervision in Psychology continuing education course operated by the Psychologists’ Association of Alberta (PAA) and Werklund School of Education at the University of Calgary. I wrote and curate the on-line clinical supervision course now offered by PAA. I have provided supervision workshops and training professional associations and regulators, organizations such as health regions and multi-service mental health agencies, and major promoters of mental health workshops. I provide supervision mentoring and consultation to developing supervisors. I have consulted to mental health agencies and health authorities to embed quality clinical supervision into their service delivery models.
- I lead workshops and speak on solution-focused and narrative ideas, family therapy, high-conflict divorce, and clinical supervision, locally, and worldwide.
- As a consultant, I have used my experience developing and leading clinical services (community and school-based), a private practice, and educational programs to help others improve services and outcomes. I have written and reviewed submissions to professional regulators and program accreditors, and can do the same for other graduate programs in the counselling and psychotherapy arena. I have provided expert opinion to regulatory bodies and professional associations when a member has been complained against. On the flip side, I also consult to therapists who are the subject of a professional complaint.
- As an author and editor, I work to generate publications that offer practical guidance to counsellors and therapists.
